In less than one week, six members of the Air Force World Class Athlete Program on Pikes Peak Elite Track Club will be traveling to Mungyeong, South Korea to compete in the 6th CISM Military World Games. The Games occur every 4 years under the CISM motto of “Friendship Through Sport”, and this year will include nearly 6,000 athletes from 110 countries—essentially the Olympics of Military Sports. The opening ceremony for the Games is on October 2, marking the start of competition for 24 separate sports, concluding with closing ceremonies on October 11.
These first Games took place to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and of the ratification of the United Nations. By organizing those Games, CISM has launched the most explicit and spectacular message of peace to the whole world. There is indeed no better meaningful and beautiful message of peace than the one sent to the world by the representatives of more than 100 Armed Forces. Those who had seemed to be forever divided by ideological and political barriers come together under the CISM flag in the name of friendship.
The PPETC athletes will be part of 25 Track & Field athletes representing the joint Armed Forces of Team USA, competing October 4-8 with qualifying rounds prior to finals in some events. Specific events & dates (qualifying/finals) are as follows:
Ben Payne – 5000m run – October 6/8
Matt Williams – 3000m Steeplechase – October 7
