Payne Finishes 17th at Olympic Trials

It was a hot and sunny morning in Los Angeles this past Saturday for the 2016 Olympic Marathon Trials. Pikes Peak Elite and World Class Athlete-Air Force runners Matt Williams and Ben Payne lined up against roughly 200 of the best U.S. distance runners.

Despite it being the hottest Olympic trials ever, Ben Payne ran an amazing race, setting a new personal best of 2:18:37 for 17th place overall.

“The race was an amazing (and hot, and painful) experience and I’m so proud to earn Top 20,” said Payne. “I’ve enjoyed reading each and every text, post, and email from people from all phases of my life and it’s sure been a fun journey.” (Read more from Ben’s Blog)

Matt Williams started off smooth but unfortunately suffered severe muscle cramps in the later half of the race. He was one of 61 runners who were unable to finish the race.

Although the conditions were not ideal, Matt and Ben were grateful for their many supporters who came out to cheer them on, including coaches Juli Benson and Mark Stanforth.

“Great day at the office. So proud of these two, both how hard they work and that they serve our country as Air Force officers. Lucky me.”                  – Coach Juli Benson ‪
